Baba is finally here!

Yes, you heard right. Baba is finally here. Baba is an illustration done by my good friend Williams Fincannon. I simply assisted in creating the webpage for this creative idea. Baba will be dealing with many topics in a serious and also whimsical manner.

Baba is not like other sheep. He doesn’t follow the flock. He isn’t unnecessarily stubborn or skittish or tolerant of tyranny. He hates mobs– hates that they are usually unjust. He hates that the individuals within them want to get caught up and lose perspective. He hates inequality, too. Hates it beause he’s lived it, being born and raised in the clover fields of North Carolina.

See, one time there was this poofy ass group of ewe-know-whats hogging all the clover and carrying on like they were the pride of the flock. For days this went on. So many were going without because a few were either too stupid or too greedy to notice or care that they were eating more than their share. Baba wasn’t gonna have any of that; he was a fair-minded individual. He trotted right up to the leader of that group and gave her the lesson of the day.

You do NOT get to take more than you need with all these little lambs running around here starving, trying to eat bits of chewed up clover when they fall out of your mouth like they was some kinda livestock. You should be ashamed of yourself. Who raised you?”

The ewe looked at Baba for a moment, offered up an annoyed “baaa” and went back to eating.

“More!? You need more clover!? Really!? You’ve done eaten the whole south pasture land! This stuff doesn’t grow back overnight you know?”

At that the ewe finished chewing, swallowed and headed towards the shade, presumably for a nap.

“Thank you,” Baba said.

“Baaaaaaaaa,” replied the ewe.

As I said, Baba is not like other sheep.

Typographic Variations

Typography is an art or process of setting and arranging types and printing from them. Typography can be quite beautiful when done right. My favorite classes at Appalachian State University have been the ones focused on typography. Personally I believe every graphic and web designer should partake in typographic courses! There is a lot to be learned from typography; it can be the difference between a great design and an AMAZING design. Typography in websites? Yes, it is possible with careful planning. Even though we are at times limited when designing for the web, I believe many things can be accomplished through planning and organization. I’ve rambled on about the limitations of web design before so I won’t go into it again. Back to the real topic: typography. The images below are of a project I did for one of my typography classes. We were given a quote from a typographer and we were to create several typographic variations that enhanced the message. We were to create some very structured prototypes as well as some that were out there. This was one of my very first typographic projects; I learned many lessons while working on this project. I have selected some of my favorite designs to show you.

A few snaps here and there

I wouldn’t consider myself a full time photographer, but I do enjoy taking a few snap shots here and there. Photography is very important since it plays upon the skill of creating a successful composition. The six photographs that have been selected demonstrate a desolate scene in which a young boy is standing and pondering. There is a strong feeling of disconnection or isolation from the world. Furthermore, the viewer is struck with the presence of modern day buildings and surroundings with only one human present. The photographs are a metaphor of entrapment and the idea of breaking free from one’s environment. Each photograph plays upon each other; the series focus’s on key elements of the surrounding space to form the mood. The viewer will be captivated by the isolation seen throughout each of these prints. Although my photographs show no immediate action there is a strong implied narrative that leave the viewer guessing. As human beings we are able to feel this isolation if we have ever questioned our existence or natural environments. The photographs will leave you with more questions than answers.

Illustrations

Illustrations have always been a strong passion of mine. My love for illustration started when I began creating very abstract shapes; they were mostly triangular shapes. From that I began experimenting with more realistic forms of illustration. I find it very relaxing to create an image on paper and transform it into a vector in illustrator. You can take it even further and go into Photoshop where you are truly unlimited.

There are so many ways that you can create beautiful illustrations through the computer. My passion continues to grow in this field of design. Many say you need patience to illustrate, but for me it’s more of getting lost in your design. Time tends to fly when I illustrate. I am intrigued by each little crevice and detail—it’s hard to let go of a design once I have started it. I encourage anyone who has a few hours to spare to take one of your sketches and create an illustration from it. It’s a great way to take your images further!

Logo Design

I will speak a little about the logo now; after all this is a design blog. When creating the logo for the Wicked Monkey group I had a large task at hand. I needed to create a logo that would differentiate ourselves from the other survey products like surveygizmo, surveymonkey, and other companies in the related field. SurveyCanvas allows researchers to produce surveys in multiple formats at a low cost and at high quality. I created many sketches that show the Wicked Monkey as a powerful competitive product that is reliable. The logo I created shows that any product coming out of the Wicked Monkey (like SurveyCanvas) can be trusted and is user friendly. This logo shows a powerful, sturdy, and reliable company in the making!

Personal Website

Personal Website (Under Construction)

Let’s talk html and css

Creating my personal website has challenged me in many ways as a designer. I chose to recreate my website because I didn’t feel the old one portrayed who I was correctly. Furthermore, it was unorganized in terms of style, typefaces, and information. I have carefully created a style guide for this website that will keep me in check on my creative decisions. From many forms of inspiration I began rendering a rough layout of my website on Illustrator. This gave me good insight on what the site would be looking like. Carefully organizing and moving around elements on my digital canvas gave me a look that I was quite pleased with. That was easy! Well, let’s go into Dreamweaver and see how well it cooperates. I now call Dreamweaver a typographer’s nightmare (okay, it’s not that bad but still). Putting time and effort I was able to achieve an incredibly similar design to the one I created in illustrator. Now, I’m not finished with my website so I don’t want to speak to soon on any matter besides the overall design aesthetics.

I need a logo too?

Of course I do. Initially, I didn’t want to complete a logo before the website was completed. After battling myself I concluded that the style guide is firm, the design is firm, and I know the direction in which the website is headed. I began going into process and planning for my logo. Personal logo’s are hard. I don’t know if it’s because you want to represent yourself in the best way or you don’t know how to express yourself! Either way, I spent several days drawing roughs on paper and listing words that I associate myself with. The logo I created speaks to the designer side of me and also to the nit picky side to me. I used the CMYK colors to form my initials. I want the viewer to know I’m a designer who cares about the selection/importance of colors and who believes in the power of design! Thanks for listening to me ramble on about myself, until next time!
